Meet Captain Bruce Lozekar, born and raised in Chisholm, Minnesota. Bruce has been in Alaska 28 years. His home has been in Halibut Cove, across the bay from Homer. He worked for Clem Tillion for over 25 years keeping all Clem's vessels and machinery running. A superb carpenter, Bruce has built many docks and homes in the area.
Bruce has also spent many years commercial fishing (seining for salmon, gillnetting for salmon, crabbing and long lining for halibut). He has held a USCG 100ton license for 17 yrs.
There was always time for sport fishing and Bruce's mother swears that he can catch fish in a closet! He became famous locally for winning 1st in the Winter King Salmon Derby in 2004 and taking top dollar (over $41,000) for a 3rd place fish in 2005.
For the last two years Bruce has been working on the Eager Beaver, (now Memory Maker) and has now taken command of the vessel full time.
In his spare time you will find Bruce fishing, and fishing some more. He too, has fished all over the world for marlin and tuna, most recently out of San Diego all the way to Mexico. His goal is to remain top contender in all the derby's and to keep the Memory Maker in meticulous condition. |

Meet Captain Brenda Hays, owner of Memory Maker Charters. Brenda got her 6 pack license in 1979, and began her halibut charter career with Seahawk Charters, in Homer. Soon, she wanted to get experience on larger vessels, so she went king crab fishing for several years, and up graded to 100ton. Her next position was Captain of a 54' wooden boat, Halibut King, carrying 24 passengers for halibut chartering, in Homer.
In 1981 she landed a position on the University of Alaska Research vessel the Alpha Helix, doing everything from glacier studies, salinity studies, bottom core sampling, bird studies, just to name a few. Her next move was to the NOAA Ship Rainier, a 235' hydro-graphic survey ship where she served four years as Able Body Seaman, Seaman Surveyor, all the way to Quartermaster. In 1988 she sat for her 1600 ton Masters license, but missing Homer, she came back and bought her own commercial fishing boat the F/V Arch Cape, a beautiful wooden boat built in 1953.. Brenda fished this boat for 19 years in a variety of fisheries ranging from tendering for salmon, long lining for halibut, crabbing, chartering, and lots of painting and woodwork in between.
In 2006 she began sailing as Mate on the Tug Redoubt towing a 200 foot barge. The Redoubt delivers goods and supplies to villages from Seward, Ak. to Bethel, Ak. ( a village 100 miles up the Kuskakwim River), and to various villages up the many rivers in Bristol Bay. The Redoubt also does local work up Cook Inlet, all the way to Anchorage.
Brenda's hobbies are of course fishing and fishing. She and Bruce have chased fish all over the world, but here favorite place to fish is Cabo San Lucas Mexico for dorado, tuna and marlin.
Brenda's well known in the tournament world, and has won 1st place in the Homer Elks Derby, 1st in the first silver salmon derby and several third places in the the winter king derby locally.
Her new goal is to beat Captain Bruce's 1st place fish in the 2004 winter king derby! |
